In the Interview Dr. Carsten Borchard, MD
Dr. Borchard relies on minimally invasive therapies for the treatment of venous diseases
Dr. med. Carsten Borchard practices in his own clinic in Münster and specializes in internal and general medicine, phlebology, and aesthetic medicine. With his over 20 years of experience, the focus of his treatment is always on the patient, and together with his team, he strives to provide the optimal treatment for each patient individually.
1. Dr. Borchard, you have specialized in your practice in the treatment of venous diseases using minimally invasive therapies. Why?
“I consciously chose minimally invasive therapies because these procedures are particularly gentle and effective for patients. Venous diseases, such as varicose veins, are widespread and can significantly impair quality of life. Through minimally invasive laser therapies, we can specifically treat the affected vein segment without heavily burdening the body. Minimally invasive therapies offer many advantages for patients, such as shorter recovery times, less pain, and a very low risk of complications, which also improves the results achieved.”
2. What treatment options are available to me as a patient?
“In our practice, we offer a range of modern therapy methods that are individually tailored to the specific needs of the patients. These include classical sclerotherapy, endovenous laser therapy (ELVeS) with biolitec technology, as well as other minimally invasive methods for the removal of spider veins and larger varicose veins. Depending on the diagnosis and disease progression, we create a customized treatment plan for each patient that allows for a quick and lasting improvement of symptoms.”
3. Can every patient be treated with laser therapy?
“Laser therapy is generally suitable for most patients, but the decision depends on individual factors such as the stage of the disease, the condition of the affected veins, and any pre-existing conditions. During a comprehensive consultation and ultrasound examination, we determine whether laser therapy is the right method or if an alternative treatment might be more suitable. Safety and optimal results are our top priorities.”
4. How long does the treatment usually take and can I go home immediately afterward?
“A laser treatment usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the number and course of the affected veins. It is performed on an outpatient basis, so patients can usually go home directly after a short stay in our practice. Since the treatment is minimally invasive, no general anesthesia is required, and patients are quickly mobile again.”
5. Many patients worry about long downtime after varicose vein treatment. Is this concern justified with ELVeS laser therapy and what does the aftercare look like?
“One of the great strengths of ELVeS laser therapy is the short downtime it allows. Since the method is minimally invasive, most patients can return to their normal daily routine the next day. We generally recommend wearing compression stockings for a few days after the treatment to support the healing process and optimize the results. Heavy physical exertion should be avoided in the first two weeks after the procedure, but otherwise, there are hardly any restrictions. Patients usually experience a significant improvement in symptoms and do not have to endure long recovery times, making ELVeS laser therapy particularly attractive.”
