The Benefits of Laser Treatment for Enlarged Prostate

Interview Dr. Toshihide Miyauchi

In the interview, Dr. Toshihide Miyauchi from Oita Urological Hospital in Japan explains the advantages of modern laser therapy procedures for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and for which patients they are particularly suitable.

What makes the biolitec® laser system special in prostate treatments?

Dr. Miyauchi explains that the biolitec® laser system uses a highly effective light beam, with laser fibers shaped to precisely vaporize a large portion of prostate tissue in a short time. At the same time, surrounding tissue areas are preserved. This precision generally reduces blood loss and facilitates the procedure.

For which patients is laser therapy suitable?

The doctor primarily uses laser treatment in men who do not respond adequately to conservative (purely medicinal) treatment methods or already have lower urinary tract symptoms – such as urinary retention, recurrent urinary tract infections, or bladder stones associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Additionally, some patients specifically opt for this option themselves.

What are the risks regarding incontinence or ejaculation?

Dr. Miyauchi describes that excessive damage to the urethral sphincter can lead to stress urinary incontinence, while retrograde ejaculation occurs due to thermal damage to the ejaculatory duct area. Modern laser procedures like those at biolitec® can potentially reduce these complications as they work more precisely and affect less surrounding tissue.

Why is laser treatment also suitable for high-risk patients?

According to Dr. Miyauchi, an advantage of the diode laser is its low tendency to cause bleeding and its high tissue vaporization rate. This makes the procedure a safe and feasible option even for patients at higher risk – such as those on antithrombotic therapy, older individuals, or patients with particularly pronounced BPH.

How do patients evaluate laser therapy?

Most patients report less pain and bleeding after the treatment and a faster recovery of urinary function. Many can urinate without discomfort early on and are satisfied with the outcome.
