Hemorrhoids

Overview

  • Hemorrhoids are part of the anatomy of the human body and consist of well-vascularized cushions of tissue in the rectal area.
  • Problems arise only when these hemorrhoids increase in size, leading to symptoms such as itching, burning, or moisture around the anus.
  • The treatment of hemorrhoids varies depending on the extent of their enlargement and the intensity of the symptoms, ranging from simple home remedies to medical interventions.
  • Enlarged hemorrhoids are a common phenomenon, affecting an estimated one in two people over the age of 30.

What are Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in the lower area of the rectum or anus. They resemble varicose veins and can occur both inside the rectum (internal hemorrhoids) and outside the anus (external hemorrhoids). Hemorrhoids are usually not dangerous and can be effectively treated with appropriate measures.

How common are Hemorrhoids?

About every second adult over the age of 30 is affected by enlarged hemorrhoids. This condition is very common and affects men and women equally.

Causes of Hemorrhoids

The development of hemorrhoids can be favored by various factors. These include chronic constipation or diarrhea, prolonged sitting, obesity, pregnancy and childbirth, as well as heavy lifting. A genetic predisposition can also play a role.

Symptoms of Hemorrhoids

The symptoms of hemorrhoids vary depending on the type and severity. The most common symptoms include itching, pain, bleeding during bowel movements, and the feeling of a swelling in the anal area. Internal hemorrhoids are often painless but can bleed during bowel movements. External hemorrhoids can be painful, especially if they contain a blood clot.

Diagnosis of Hemorrhoids

The diagnosis of hemorrhoids is made through a medical examination. This may include a digital rectal examination, a proctoscopy, or a colonoscopy, especially if blood is detected in the stool.

Treatment of Hemorrhoids

The treatment of hemorrhoids depends on the severity and type of symptoms. Mild cases can often be treated with home remedies such as warm sitz baths, the application of hemorrhoid creams or suppositories, and dietary changes. However, more severe cases may require medical interventions.

Treatment options by severity

Hemorrhoids of grade 1 and 2: These can often be treated with sclerotherapy, where a substance is injected to reduce the blood supply to the hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids of grade 2 and 3: Rubber band ligation may be considered here. In this method, the hemorrhoids are tied off so that they fall off after some time.

Hemorrhoids of grade 3 or 4: In these cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the enlarged vascular cushions. There are various surgical procedures, depending on the location and size of the hemorrhoids.

Laser treatment of Hemorrhoids: LHP Procedure

An innovative and effective method for treating hemorrhoids is the Laser Hemorrhoidoplasty (LHP) procedure. This minimally invasive technique uses a special laser to target the hemorrhoids without damaging the surrounding tissue. The advantages of the LHP procedure include rapid healing, minimal pain, and a low likelihood of complications.

Procedure of the LHP Method

The minimally invasive laser procedure LHP provides the treating physician with a new, gentle treatment option. The goal of medical treatment is the controlled shrinking of the hemorrhoids while preserving their function.

1. The laser fiber is precisely placed in the center of the hemorrhoidal cushion under visual guidance.

2. Each hemorrhoid is specifically irradiated from the inside with the LHP® laser fiber.

3. As a result of the treatment, the hemorrhoids shrink and gradually regress.

Prevention of Hemorrhoids

To reduce the risk of hemorrhoids, it is important to engage in regular physical activity, follow a high-fiber diet, drink enough fluids, and avoid prolonged sitting. Additionally, excessive straining during bowel movements should be avoided.
