Genital Warts in Men: Causes and Treatment
Genital warts, medically known as condylomas (Condylomata acuminata), are among the most common sexually transmitted infections. They are caused by certain types of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), particularly HPV 6 and HPV 11.
In men, genital warts primarily appear on the penis, glans, foreskin, scrotum, or in the perineal area. In some cases, changes may also occur at the urethral opening or in the anal region.
The warts are usually benign but can cause itching, burning, or discomfort during sexual intercourse. Many affected individuals also find the visible skin changes psychologically distressing.
When is Laser Treatment for Genital Warts in Men Advisable?
Not every genital wart requires laser treatment. In addition to topically applied medications, various therapy options are available. Laser therapy can be particularly advisable,
- for larger or numerous genital warts,
- for recurrent findings,
- for hard-to-reach locations,
- when other treatment methods have not been successful,
- or when precise and tissue-sparing removal is desired.

How Does the Laser Treatment Proceed?
Before the procedure, the treating urologist examines the affected skin and mucous membrane areas. Depending on the extent, the treatment is performed under local anesthesia or – for larger findings – under short general anesthesia.
The genital warts are then precisely removed using laser energy. Simultaneously, the laser seals small blood vessels, resulting in minimal bleeding. After the procedure, the patient receives individual recommendations for wound care and follow-up.

Genital Warts in Men: What to Consider After Treatment?
In the first few days, the treated area should be kept clean and dry. Sexual intercourse, intense physical activity, and swimming pool or sauna visits should be avoided until complete wound healing. The treating urologist will provide information on the individually recommended follow-up care.
